Do you need a therapist or just a good listener?
This is exactly where people get stuck with feelings they need to unravel, they’re struggling, things feel very heavy and confused but there is a hesitation because they think ‘maybe I don’t actually need therapy, maybe I just need to talk to someone before I scream’.
Many people just need to talk to someone. Females tend to be more in need of someone to talk to than males are.
Most people already have someone to talk to but they know it’s not the right person for their particular emotional experience that they’re going through, and again most people are familiar with a friend from the past where they used to talk about matters of the heart. So, it’s not really a chat people want, they’ve had many chats but what they’re really asking is whether their situation needs a structured psychological professional to support them or just an emotional release chat. And in most cases, it’s just an emotional release chat that is required.
Talking to someone you trust!
Talking to someone you trust is very valuable. You already have friends, partners, family and they all play a part and can reduce your pressure somewhat or give you comfort, but it does have a limit as most personal conversations naturally lean towards opinions and advice or shared experiences coming from people who were talking from what they feel.
In other words, a lot of advice that people give is coming from their own perceptions and experiences and people find it difficult to step into the shoes of other people, to meet the expectations of the person needing advice.
General chatting and conversation don’t change deep patterns or long-standing emotional difficulties.
Therapy differs because it’s not casual support and it’s not a casual chat; it’s a structured psychological supporting space with a professional who can interpret things in ways you never imagined and the focus stays on you consistently without any destruction or judgments. As you may know when you’re chatting to family members, conversations always drift onto them when it’s you that needs someone to listen to your difficulties and not have it become about them.
A therapist is trained to notice patterns and reactions you may not see and the main reason you can’t see it is because you’re too close to it, almost as if your nose is touching a brick wall, you know there’s one or two bricks there but you can’t see the whole wall (the problem) because you’re too close to it.
When you try to sort your own problems out on your own, you keep entering into thinking loops, going round in circles and also avoiding behaviours or even available solutions that you know are there, you are just mentally blocked and these things become invisible from the inside but clearly seen when you share them with a professional.
Talking to just friends
Just talking to friends and family might reassure you or give you advice like ‘just don’t think about it’ or ‘you’ll be fine’ and the last thing you want is a pat upon your shoulder telling you to pull yourself together and go to the pub.
Therapy on the other hand slows things down and places the attention constantly on you and allows you to look at the patterns and how they are formed and maintained without you realising it. Therapists are good at this without you realising it.
Additionally, the difference between friends and family or a therapy scenario is emotional containment, as in therapy there is space for difficult feelings to be shared without the pressure to fix them there and then immediately.
Remember therapy is not always about extreme situations or even trauma, it can just be about having intelligent feedback and new ways of looking at problems and better managing what keeps entering your mind and your feelings.
So how do you decide?
If what you need is clarity and pattern recognition or to make changes at a deeper level, then therapy is and certainly more the right choice to sit with a professional.
If your thinking is stuck in an unsure loop and you’re wondering whether something deeper is taking place within you, something really concerning. Then that certainly is enough to explore therapy and make contact with a therapist!
